Here's an example of a pop culture library on steroids (http://www.ideastore.co.uk/). I don't think it will be long before every library looks like Barnes and Noble or Borders. The challenge for libraries in the future will be reminding patrons that libraries are a free alternative to retailers. Library 2.0 concepts like virtual reference and 2nd Life library services seem like a good way for libraries to create a presence in cyberspace. Librarians who are just entering the field (basically us) are going to have to work that much harder to keep up with patron needs because popular culture isn't just books, TV, and movies anymore. Our lives are changing every year because of how fast technology keeps evolving. 5 years ago, had you ever heard of MySpace, 2nd Life, or Wikipedia?
Thank you for the helpful link! My focus is Teen Library work and I am really fascinated by how pop culture influences teenagers and young adults. I would say that I am a child of pop culture (though not TV culture necessarily), but i am always astounded at how people at Barnes and Noble (my work place) gravitate to what's popular, not necessarily what's good.
